Persians engineered refrigerators

Persians engineered refrigerators in 400BC.

Persians created a manner of refrigeration by building large, cone-like structures with underground storage. These were called Yakhchāl (یخچال‎ ) in the Persian language, which means ice pit. They were used both for the storage of ice and the storage of food. These “refrigerators” meant that Persians could store ice during a desert summer.
Many had windtowers, in order to harness the wind to aid the cooling of ice and products in the Yakhchāl. Often there was a wall on one side of the Yakhchāl in which water would be channeled during the winter. The shade from the Yakhchāl would cause the water to freeze more, allowing more ice to be collected for storage for the summer.
The Yakhchāl had insulation made of sand, clay, egg whites, lime, goat hair, and ash. It also had a trench system that collected melted water from the ice and allowed it to refreeze at night and be recollected. The ice was generally used to serve royalties.

Between 0.4 and 6% of women have an extra breast!

Between 0.4 and 6% of women have an extra breast!

While rare, sometimes people are born with certain anomalies that may or may not be noticeable. We've covered, for example, kids who are born with extra limbs or fingers and need to be operated on to get rid of them. It's estimated that somewhere between 0.4 and 6% of women are born with an extra breast or even pairs of breasts. Most of them do not develop fully.
The tissue is often misdiagnosed as being lymphatic or cystic. They're usually located in the lower armpit and are known as accessory breasts. Yet some others are born with an extra nipple or nipples, usually located under the breasts. While it's an oddity, neither the extra nipples nor the accessory breasts need to be removed in usual circumstances.

Woman who survived the sinking of the Titanic

There was a woman who survived the sinking of the Titanic, and accidents on its 2 sister ships!

Violet Constant Jessop has to be one of the luckies women in maritime history. She worked as an ocean liner stewardess and nurse. She survived the sinking of the RMS Titanic and the HMHS Britannic in 1912, and 1916. What's more, she also had been on board the RMS Olympic in 1911, when it almost sank after colliding with another ship.
Violet was on board the Titanic, working as a stewardess. When the ship hit the iceberg, she was ordered on deck, and eventually boarded a lifeboat. She was given a baby to look after, which was taken from her without a word a few hours later. While that story might seem boring, how she survived the sinking of the Britannic, is much more exciting.
The boat hit a mine in 1916, and began sinking. She was on board of a lifeboat, but it was in danger of being sucked into the Britannic's propellers. She had to jump and fight to avoid an almost fatal encounter with them. She was sucked underwater, but thankfully saved by another lifeboat.

A lion’s roar

A lion’s roar can be heard five miles away!

A lion’s roar is one of the loudest noises any animal on Earth can make. It is so loud that it can be heard over five miles away from the lion! Scientists have been doing research on the immense sound lion’s emit and have discovered that the reason its loud isn’t because of lung capacity.
It’s actually because they have an unusual set of vocal cords which allow them to produce a noise that is both hard and heavy at the same time, all with hardly using the respiratory system. These vocal cords contain two membranes which are covered in a peculiar layer of fat that allow the vocal cords to vibrate horizontally, magnifying the sound!

Sand is nothing compared to moon dust.

Worried about sand getting everywhere? Sand is nothing compared to moon dust.

The Apollo Moon missions of the late 60's and early 70's were inconvenienced by the annoyance of moon dust. Moon dust is as fine as flour, but more rough and corrosive than sandpaper. The particles can cause endless trouble on space suits and other equipment. During the Apollo 17 mission, some crew members wound up with moon dust gummed up in the joints of their space suits, and as a result could barely move.
The dust was so corrosive that it wore through three layers of Kevlar-like material. To make matters even worse, moon dust suffers from very strong static cling, making it almost impossible to remove. The moon dust also poses a health threat, because it contains iron, and is so fine that it can easily be absorbed and can cause iron toxicity in the body. The only bright side is that because of the iron, it responds well to removal by magnets. Hopefully this hasn't crushed anyone's dreams of living on the moon someday!

His note said "my work is done, why wait."

The inventor of the snapshot camera committed suicide. His note said "my work is done, why wait."

His name was George Eastman. He was the inventor of the first Kodak snapshot camera. You might recognize the name he gave to it: the Kodak camera. In addition to being one of the first brand names invented from nonsense syllables, it also sparked a photographic revolution that is still strong today.
He was able to simplify the photography process and create a product that everyone was able to use. He also pioneered a system in which employees of the company got dividends, essentially making them part-owners of the company. Sadly, when he was 77, he had spinal stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spinal canal. The pain for him was pretty big.
He decided to commit suicide by shooting himself in the heart. He left a short and simple note: "To my friends: My work is done. Why wait?"

After World War II, Denmark turned down an offer of $100,000,000 from the United States to buy Greenland.

Post World War II, the United States became interested in Greenland, due its closer proximity to Europe. The looming threat of a war with the USSR was just beginning and the Cold War with it.
In the hope of gaining a better foothold in Europe with which to establish closer missile defense, in 1946, the US offered to buy Greenland from Denmark for $100,000,000, but Denmark refused. In 1950, however, Denmark allowed the United States to establish the Thule Air Base, as part of a NATO Cold War defense strategy. So in the end, the US accomplished their general goal.

A U-Boat was sunk by a broken toilet.

U-Boats are the names given to German submarines. In World War II, U-1206 was a late war U-Boat fitted with then-new deep water high pressure heads, which enabled them to be used while deep underwater. Flushing these facilities, including toilets, was so complex that special technicians had to be trained to operate them.
On April 14, 1945, U-1206 was cruising at a depth of 200 feet, when a misuse of the new high pressure heads caused water to flood the boat. The water flooded the submarine's batteries under the toilet, causing a leak of chlorine gas, and forcing the crew to surface the boat. Everything would have been okay had they not surfaced near a British patrol. Upon surfacing, the British patrol bombed them, resulting in the death of four men, and capture of forty six more.

Hangover Fact

Hangover Facts

A hangover is a condition which is a result of the consumption of an excessively large amount of alcohol. But in reality a hangover is more like a withdrawal from alcohol for a short time period. A lot of experts state that some of the ingredients which are present in alcohol cause the hangover. The ingredients which are present in alcohol are known as congeners.

During the ancient times, people used a combination containing myrrh and the beaks of birds which had been grounded to a fine paste, in order to treat a hangover. But most people feel that a similar combination cannot be used in the modern times in order to treat a hangover. Liquor which is light like vodka and gin should be consumed instead of heavy and dark liquors like whiskey and brandy. All kinds of alcoholic beverages which contain chemicals should be avoided since they will cause a very sever hangover. The worst hangover will usually be caused by the consumption of red wine. A lot of people are also likely to become very angry and depressed after they have consumed a large amount of alcohol.

Lion And Tiger = Liger

Lion And Tiger = Liger

What happens when a male lion and a female tiger breed? A Liger - the largest of all felines. A liger looks like a giant lion with diffused stripes and some male ligers grow sparse manes. These massive creatures are 10 feet long on average and weigh about 700 lb (320kg). Liger love swimming - trait common to tigers but lacking in lions. Ligers have been bred in captivity, deliberately and accidentally, since shortly before World War II. The largest liger alive today is appropriately named Hercules and lives in Jungle Island in Miami.

Fire Rainbow Facts

Fire Rainbow Facts

A beautiful work of nature, fire rainbows are not a common sight. Fire rainbows are circumhorizon arcs commonly known as CHA in scientific language. Fire rainbows occur in cirrus clouds which are wispy and thin. For this incredible sight the cirrus clouds should be at 20000 feet height with sun at 58 degrees. The amount of ice crystals in the clouds need to be appropriate and properly aligned for the light to pass through it. The phenomenon is the result of refraction of light when it passes through vertical side and exits from the rear as it is in the case of a prism. If the inclination is of 90 degrees the colors can be seen well arranged and the cloud seems bursting with colorful flames. Though the name suggests it to be a hot, flammy phenomenon but it is cold like ice. This spectacular event of nature lasts for a short time and is a rare sight as all factors need to be available at correct time and at correct position.

Killer Whale Facts

Killer Whale Facts

The killer whale, or Orcinus orca, is one of the most beautiful animals in the world. A killer whale is a very large animal that can be more than fifteen feet in length upon maturity. The large dorsal fin on the whale is used to allow a whale to stabilize its movements. It can be up to six feet high for a male and four feet high for a female.

The birthing period for a killer whale can take a while. It will take sixteen months for a female to produce and give birth. After this the mother will nurse the newborn for a year.

The teeth that a killer whale has for eating fish and various marine mammals are very large. A whale can have about forty to sixty teeth with these teeth being up to three inches long and one inch in diameter. These teeth will have a great deal of food each day because a whale can eat about five percent of its weight per day. Whales use echolocation to locate their pray by sending echo waves and waiting for the sound to bounce back from the object.

Killer whales can be found foraging for food, traveling around the water and resting by slowing down in the water. All of these activities are generally done in groups. Interesting fact about killer whales is that female are the dominant figure in the pod and they usually outnumber males. Male whales average 30 years lifespan while females can live up to 80 years. Interestingly these killer moms have excellent baby sitting organization.
